The Wilderness

“You in your great mercies did not forsake them in the wilderness. The pillar of cloud to lead them in the way did not depart from them by day, nor the pillar of fire by night to light for them the way by which they should go.”

Day 1 · Tension

Every day begins with a song, shares a prayer, and leaves room for yours.

Your prayer

A woman’s hands writing in an open journal at a table.

Prayer Prompt: It is hard to live with tension but that is exactly what you must learn to do in your moments in the wilderness. It is hard when your expectations of God do not match with what you are currently experiencing. It is hard when what you thought and believed would have happened by now, has not. Write a prayer about the tension you are experiencing and ask God for help, strength, clarity and courage to release your expectations, and the courage to let go of your desires in exchange for His.

The prayer

Tension …
Good morning, LORD.

As I rise, there is tension between belief and what I see—tension between what You have done in the past and what I need You to do now. I am being hit again and again with inner words and whispers saying, “You are going to have to hit the dirt… go further than you want to go… hit rock bottom… and fail with no rope to save you. You are going to live in the wilderness longer.”

But that’s not true, because the work You have started in me, You are faithful to complete. You will work things out for my good. I will not throw away my confidence, which has great reward. Right now, I need to endure. Right now, I ANSWER BACK to the whispers, lies, tricks, and deceptions, because in a little while, You, God, are coming for me! You will come and will not delay. Right now, in the middle of my fears, doubts, and wandering—looking, hoping, and waiting—I run to You, LORD, and I will fight back … Your character, Your promises, and what You have already done for me are proof that You hear me.

Amen and amen.

The full prayer is in the journal.

A way through

Thirty days, thirty prayers, thirty songs

Not a formula to get out, but a way through. A companion for each step, from the first “Tension” to the question that ends the journey: “LORD, How may I serve You today?”

Day 28 · A Harvest in a Dry Place

I am grateful—for the harvest, for the benefits, and for our relationship. I am grateful that the wilderness was purposeful, empowering, and divinely productive.

If Rahab, Esther, Sarah, Joseph, and David walked through wilderness seasons and emerged with Your help—I will too.

Dr. Kasey Whitney · Day 28

Wilderness seasons are not permanent, and the waiting is never wasted. God is present, purposeful, and faithful.
